UN Web TV AI Generated Multilingual Captions and Transcripts

The United Nations Web TV platform is advancing its digital infrastructure through an innovative initiative that integrates AI-generated multilingual captions and transcripts for global meetings and events. To achieve high-quality results across the diverse linguistic landscape of the UN, this project utilizes a strategic deployment of various Automatic Speech Recognition models. By leveraging different ASR technologies, the system is dynamically optimized to handle the unique nuances, vocabularies, and accents of specific languages. The initiative allows for the creation of live captions in English for Security Council sessions and on-demand English captions for all meetings. Furthermore, this multi-model approach enables the expansion of on-demand captions into all official UN languages for select high-profile meetings, demonstrating a strong commitment to technological excellence and global linguistic inclusivity.

Beyond technological innovation, this project represents a significant leap forward in making United Nations proceedings fundamentally more accessible to individuals with disabilities. The reliable provision of live and on-demand captions breaks down critical communication barriers for the deaf and hard of hearing communities, ensuring equitable access to vital international discourse. By providing readable text alternatives to spoken dialogue, the initiative directly supports global citizens, advocates, and civil society members who require accessible formats to follow complex policy discussions.

To ensure maximum utility, full-text transcripts can be downloaded directly from the UN Web TV website or from the UN Web TV Player itself anywhere it is embedded. Ultimately, this integration of AI-driven accessibility tools aligns with the core values of the UN, fostering a more inclusive environment where global audiences can fully participate in the work of the organization regardless of their physical abilities.
