Africa AngolaBotswanaComorosEswatiniLesothoMadagascarMalawiMauritiusMozambiqueNamibiaSeychellesSouth AfricaZambiaZimbabwe

This project is leveraging Machine Learning (ML) for understanding hydrogeological systems in the absence of comprehensive datasets within the SADC region. The project intends to expand the use of ML in other transboundary waters and is collaborating with a consortium that has piloted ML in transboundary aquifers. Additionally, the project aims to enhance its capacity for measuring achievements and compliance using monitoring tools, potentially indicating the use of AI/ML for data analysis and decision-making processes.

Algorithmic Assignment of Mediators to Court Cases
Africa Kenya

In Kenya, many court cases concerning land, inheritance, custody, and family matters are referred to the newly introduced court-annexed mediation (CAM) system. However, 58% of mediation cases are not successfully resolved and returned to the court, and agreement rates vary greatly by mediator. In a partnership between the CAM, The World Bank and Virginia Tech, this project uses historical data on mediation cases to design and pilot an algorithm that can enhance the assignment of cases to mediators. In a randomized controlled trial, the study aims to evaluate the impact of enhanced mediator assignment via algorithmic recommendations, and thus rigorously evaluate whether AI-enabled case assignment can improve the outcomes and well-being of mediation parties.
